RESEARCH PANEL

The very first step in conducting final year project is selecting the research panel or research topics. The ability to develop a good research topic is an important skill. A supervisor may assign you a specific topic, but most often supervisors require you to select your own topic of interest. When deciding on a topic, there are a few things that you will need to do:

1. The ability of students to brainstorm for ideas about that topic.
2. Choose a topic that will enable you to read and understand the literature very well.
3. Ensure that the topic is manageable and that material is available.
4. Make a list of key words. Define whether you have interest of that topic or not.
5. Define your topic as a focused research question, do some research and read more about your topic.
6. Try to formulate a problem statement for that topic, are you capable to do that?

Be aware that selecting a good topic may not be easy. It must be narrow and focused enough to be interesting, yet broad enough to find adequate information. Before selecting your topic, make sure you know what your under graduate project should look like. Each supervisor will likely require a different style of doing research project.

Please determine whether your topic is experimental or simulation. That maybe give you some ideas to choose your title.

In School of Mechanical Engineering, title of Final Year Project (FYP) will be determined and endorse by the research panel.

Students can also browse MECHYPEDIA to find out research and work done by lecturers at the School of Mechanical Engineering, UTM. A search can be made using the name of the lecturer involved. Students can also use keywords related to the field of study that students are interested in to start the search.
